Bay Area based producer Erica Mar presents her new 6-track EP for Occultists, the work called La Chueca (The Crippled or The Crooked). Here downtempo atmospheres, broken rhythms and suspended soundscapes guide us in a personal sonic journey. ‘Slither Inside’ crawls into our ears with its ghostly innuendos and eerie effects, conjuring a fragmented track ready to explode during its second half in soothing climaxes, while the Title Track plays with slow bass sounds and syncopated patterns. Evoking restrained energy that never explodes. “Hell Paralysis” ventures in techno territories while retaining the mood of the work; obsessive kicks and cymbals move amidst a vocal confession, and a groovy bassline shows itself during the controlled crescendo, collapsing into eerie pauses full of melancholy. “Dyst” follows suit thanks to sparse rhythms and eerie ambiances concur to a sort of mutant trip hop sound with a lysergic feeling, ready to open up with emotional effects. ‘Orchid Bite’ returns to slow techno elements using sharp distortions and various rhythmic takes, while grim soundscapes underline its course. “Rosegold Filter Takedown’ ends the experience with a hypnotizing ritual made of compulsive beats and hard hitting kick drums. Old-school techno motifs have their say, but they sound more as a well crafted contrast than the main element of this experimental episode. Another example of courageous sounds reshaping the tradition via new ideas.
